City lift Premier League Cup

Glasgow City lifted the Scottish Premier League Cup this afternoon with a 3-1 win over Hibernian at Recreation Park, Alloa.

As Cup holders, City were determined to hold on to their trophy and got off to the perfect start scoring within the first minute of the kick off. Sue Lappin dispossessed Hibernian’s Stacey Cook, passing to Suzanne Malone who then set up Leanne Ross for a one on one with the Hibs keeper. The keeper saved brilliantly but could only parry wide to City’s Katharina Lindner who managed to find the back of the net with the HIbs players clambering back to protect the goal line.

City then went 2-0 up. Lindner hit a low drive across the goal, which was once again saved by the Hibs keeper, but she again pushed her save wide and this time Suzanne Malone followed up to bury the ball into the back of the net.

City made it 3-0 before half time with a good team move finished off by Suzanne Lappin. Leanne Ross played it wide to Jane Ross who cut in across the box and set up Lappin who curled a well taken shot into the back of the net.

Half time 3-0.

The second half was a scrappier affair compared to some fine football in the first half as Hibs pushed to get back into the game. City remained comfortable and should have probably added to their lead, creating a number of chances. Hibs did manage to threaten more than they did in the first half, but were reduced to long range efforts as City defended well when required.

Hibs did manage a consolation goal, right on the final whistle when Rhonda Jones rose well to beat the City defence, with what turned out to be the last kick of the ball.

Full time 3-1.

City boss Peter Caulfield was disappointed to lose a goal, but delighted his team lifted yet another trophy.

He said, “We were comfortable winners today and played particularly well in the first half and brought in a good lead at half time. We should have added to it, given our number of chances and it was disappointing to lose concentration in the final seconds to concede, but the score does not matter in finals, it is the result that counts and I am delighted we have retained the Cup. The girls have been playing really well now for a good couple of years and we need to keep building on this and push ourselves as best we can.”
