City Girls lift SWFL League Cup

Glasgow City Girls defeated Celtic B 3-0 today to lift the SWFL League Cup - an outstanding and historic result for Scottish women’s football.

Three second half goals ensured a well deserved victory for City, who today became the first Second Division side ever to win the SWFL League Cup. The Girls' result also means that Glasgow City become the first club ever to hold both the SWFL and the Premier League Cup trophies at the same time.

In the big pitch at lesser Hampden City found their way in behind the Celtic defence on a number of occasions in the first half, but were unable to find the finishing touch. Centre half Eilish McSorley did have the ball in the back of the net on 15 minutes when she headed in a well worked corner, but her goal was ruled offside.

Some strong advice from City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki at half time instilled a better performance in the team and his words proved very effective when City took the lead within the opening minute of the second half. A good run and cross from striker Lisa Evans proved too difficult to handle for Lyn Walton in the Celtic net and midfielder Lauren McMurchie pounced on the spill to put City ahead.

City doubled their advantage midway through the second half, this time striker Ashley Morgan hitting the back of the net. At this stage there was only one team in the game as City controlled and dominated possession.

With five minutes to go, Eilish McSorley ensured she was on the scoresheet when she reacted first to a knock down in the box from a cross from Lauren McMurchie, striking her shot through the keepers legs.

Girls Manager Richie Evans was extremely proud of his players. He said,”We thoroughly deserved this victory. The team have done so well. We have now defeated three First Division sides to lift this trophy and I am proud of every single player in this squad as they have all played a huge part in this victory. We are such a young team, but these are the players for the future. It is great to see the First Team do so well and our win today, shows that this club has the foundations for success for many more years to come. ”

First Team Boss Peter Caulfield added, “This is truly a remarkable club. Our First team was here watching today, just as the Girls team watched them last week lift the Premier League Cup. To have both sides holding both League Cups at the same time is amazing and a true testament to the quality of players and coaches we have. The majority of the Girls that played today are only 16 years old, and Atlanta who came on at the start of the second half is still only 14 years old. That tells a story in itself. Glasgow City has big plans and I think this last week in itself highlights that we are going in the right direction.”
